Virtual R/C cars: Best invention ever!

Category: Weird and Wacky

Come on, I think we must have all had remote control cars when we were younger. Tearing up the streets and crashing into things was a great way to spend an afternoon and it certainly beat anything that studying had to offer. Now there is a new way to waste those little scale tyres wrapped around a plastic rim, meet to the worlds first virtual remote control car controls.

The virtual head set has built in screens which receives the footage from the R/Cs body mounted camera. Accelerometers in the headset allow control over camera, and a quick turn of the head is all it takes to move the camera. That’s every kid’s fantasy right there with endless possibilities! Those who are old enough to remember those older McDonalds commercial would have memories of a kid strapping a camera to his R/C 4x4, and going for a lap to McDonalds to pick up a feed, well now everybody can do the same while remaining in the comfort of their own lounge room.

More details can be found HERE which also include tons of videos to help display the awesomeness of this little gadget and from what I can tell, the entire system is worth around $AU1000.

GINA, the BMW made of cloth revealed

Category: Weird and Wacky

Yes, we know it’s not a Holden but damn this thing is different. If anybody had any doubts of whether or not a car could be made using a cloth outer skin, this GINA concept could just change all that. In case you were wondering what GINA actually stood for, you probably should have guessed by now it means Geometry and Functions in “N” Adaptations.

The car features an outer skin made of a polyurethane-coated Lycra, saving a massive amount of weight and even boasting low energy consumption in its manufacturing. Beneath the space age cloth like skin, a state of the art movable wire mesh frame can create an almost seamless surface to totally freak out anybody who happens to go near it.

BMW have stated that occupant safety has not been sacrificed in the slightest, still featuring a solid space frame beneath the surface which is found in other BMW models featuring top ANCAP ratings.

Feel like pumping out the guards and adding wheel tubs to scare small children? No worries, simply push the ‘tough guy’ button. No bonnet here to lift folks, just a zipper by the looks of things which will be very handy during late night engine conversions.

Of course it’s not hitting the market anytime soon as there will be many GINA design flaws need sorting out before any real mass production can be made, like what happens when that bastard 13-year-old kid down the street grabs his little pocket knife and decides to re-skin your car. Either way, it’s a pretty out-there concept which has raised many industry brows in the endless possibility of the four-wheeled personal transportation device commonly known as the common car.

Around Australia on cooking oil

Category: Weird and Wacky
Posted: 30.05.2008 11:11

A honeymooning couple has embarked on a journey around Australia in their trusty diesel Landcruiser, but this is no ordinary trip. The Landercruiser, which is started on regular diesel is promptly switched over to an alternative fuel source once things warm up a little. The alternative fuel source? Used cooking oil!

The couple claim that 180 litres of uses cooking oil can get about 900km of driving out of the old girl, but it is a little difficult in getting locals to hand over used cooking oil.

"Haven't had any problems with the car at all, it runs just as good on veg oil as it does on diesel," said honeymooner Gerald Mimmo.

"The challenge is collecting the oil, a lot of people say no, you've just got to keep going," he said.
"People just might be skeptical and not sure — if someone off the street asked them for oil, they're wondering what are these people really filling?"

The couple plan to make it back to Sydney by Christmas to celebrate the journey with family but for now the next stop is Sapphire to collect a HF radio for communications out in the bush. If only they made 98RON premium cooking oil…

What the?

This one pretty much stopped us in our tracks. From what we can see, it’s a convertible EA Falcon with BMW grills grafted onto the front. There really isn’t too much more to say other than it’s different, really really different.

We wish them the best luck with the SALE, and with the bidding starting at $10k, it’s going to take one really keen collector to snap this one up.
